With
the assumption that it would not be allowed on the store shelves if
it were not safe, the over whelming majority of people have become
oblivious to the number of products containing synthetic chemicals
and to the extent they are being exposed. There are in excess of 75,000
synthetic chemicals in U.S. commerce today used in thousands of everyday
products ranging from herbicides to air fresheners and personal care
products to paints in nurseries and everything in between. These chemicals
have become ubiquitous and expose, on a daily basis, not only every
living being but those who have not yet left the womb. However, the
thought of everyday products affecting our health and that of future
generations could perhaps be the most publicly inscrutable issue in
today’s society.
What possible effects could these chemicals
have and how much is known about them individually and in combination?
Who is the regulatory authority, what is the process and can the
consumer's safety be assured?
Coming: reports from the U.S.
Government Accountability Office, the latest scientific findings
by top scientists and facts from the Centers for Disease Control.
Stay tuned. In the meantime,
I would recommend reading Our Stolen Future. A description
of this book can be found here.
